Buddhist-Christian Dialogue: From the Inside Out

Authors: Matthew Vale, Elizabeth Harris, Brian Robinette, John Makransky, Perry Schmidt-Leukel

This panel brings two Christian theologians into conversation with EuARe 2023’s keynote speaker, Buddhist teacher and scholar John Makransky. With Tibetan Buddhist traditions in view, particularly Dzogchen and Mahāmudrā, the panel’s guiding question is, What novel insights arise in Buddhist-Christian encounter when grounded both by rigorous scholarly study and committed contemplative practice? How might the emic and etic dimensions of Buddhist-Christian dialogue open new possibilities when those engaged are not only trained as scholars in their respective traditions, but also mutually disposed by a contemplative attitude of deepening receptivity and learning? In what respects is a non-Buddhist who participates in Buddhist contemplative practice still an “outsider”? How do such novel receptions of Buddhist practices relate to “insider” understandings of those practices? What interreligious contemplative pedagogies are possible in this Buddhist-Christian conversation? This panel’s two Christian practitioners will take up and develop insights from John Makransky’s body of work, which offers a significant contribution to recent Buddhist-Christian dialogue. Importantly, his contribution is at once scholarly, contemplative, and pedagogical–both rigorously grounded in the historical particularities of Buddhist practice traditions, and open to lived practice in multireligious settings. John Makransky will respond to these two Christian receptions and developments of his work.Chair: Elizabeth Harris (University of Birmingham) Speakers:Matthew Vale (Boston College), Buddhist Receptions of Christian Theology in the Work of John MakranskyBrian Robinette (Boston College), A Christian Reception of Buddhist Practice Traditions Guided by John MakranskyJohn Makransky (Boston College), Constructive Reflections Evoked by Brian Robinette and Matthew Vale
