What is the heart of doing theology in the church and academy?
Authors: Natalia Marandiuc, Ruben Rosario Rodriguez, Karen Kilby, Kevin Hughes, Awet Andemicael, Joanna Leidenhag
Both the church writ large and the academy have been undergoing complex changes in recent years, augmented by the pandemic and catalyzed by online possibilities, shifting viewpoints, financial constraints, and other factors. While theology is central to ecclesial existence, and survives in sophisticated ways academically, it is enormously differentiated within and between these morphing institutions. Whereas the genesis of academic theology is ecclesial, contemporary theologies can aid the church in imagining its vocation outside its structural walls. Racial, gender, and other contestations also intersect in variegated ways with multiple theological traditions and create generative new dialogues. This panel brings together a diverse group of established theologians to reflect on what is the heart of doing theology in the church and academy today from their contextual perspective.Chair: Joanna Leidenhag (University of Leeds) Speakers: Natalia Marandiuc (United Lutheran Seminary), Finitude, Disorder, and Resurrection: A Divine-Human Love StoryKaren Kilby (Durham University), Thinking and Feeling on the Page: The Place of the Heart in Theological WritingRuben Rosario Rodriguez (Saint Louis University), We Are the Church Despite Ourselves: The Role of Grace in Understanding EcclesiologyKevin Hughes (Villanova University), Theology as a Way of Life: Scientia and Disciplina in the Crisis of Scholastic ReasoningAwet Andemicael (Yale University), Chapel, Classroom, Church: Context and Community in the Work of a Theologian
