Christian Origins, Secularization, and Modernity in Ernst Troeltsch’s Thought

Authors: Francesco Berno, Ludovico Battista, Maria Fallica, Elena Cerqua, Niccolò Brandodoro

A reflection of the inside/outside perspectives in the religious phenomena cannot overlook the analysis of Ernst Troeltsch (1865–1923). His thought has shown the complexity of the concept of history and the dangers of historicism when connected to the deconstruction of the dogmatic tradition at the foundation of the confessional and social identities of the Churches.Because of its placing in the intersection and contamination of different trajectories of investigation, Troeltsch’s thought is a precious interlocutor not only for those who want to deepen specific historical or historical-religious issues relating to contemporary Christianity, but also for those who want to develop awareness of the methodological assumptions working in contemporary scholarship. The panel aims to focus on the relationship between Christianity and the modern world. Indeed, it is in the confrontation with the issue of secularization that Troeltsch develops the conviction that the modern device of “historicization” of the study of the religious phenomenon is inseparable from the identification of a “extra-worldly”, transcendent polarity. To this end, the panel hosts contributions that investigate Troeltsch’s production with reference to the macro-topic of the relationship between secularization and Christian identities. Equally welcome are papers related to Troeltschh’s historiographical practice, his analysis of Christian origins, his speculation on the notions of religion and Christianity.Chair: Maria Fallica (Sapienza Università di Roma) Speakers:Elena Cerqua (Sapienza Università di Roma), Beyond Kant.
