The Russia-Ukraine War and Religion: Human Rights Context

Authors: Dmytro Vovk, Elizabeth Clark, Regina Elsner, Marietta Van der Tol, Michelle Coleman

This panel will explore how the Russian-Ukrainian war has affected religious freedom and other related human rights in Ukraine, the occupied territories, and Russia. The panelists, experts on religious freedom and international law, will address the impact of Russia and Ukraine’s most recent actions, providing a clearer understanding of the current state of religious freedom and human rights in these and surrounding areas. The Russian-Ukrainian conflict has inflamed cultural divisions, redrawing lines of “insiders” and “outsiders,” especially in religious contexts. The panel will examine how believers and religious organizations historically or ecclesiastically connected with Russia have been affected by Ukraine’s national security concerns and how religious institutions have been impacted by this conflict more broadly.Speakers will specifically address the use of human rights language by the Russian Orthodox Church in support of the war, the possibility of accountability under international criminal law for the destruction of religious property, the restrictions imposed on the Ukrainian Orthodox Church from a religious freedom perspective, and how religious pluralism, church-state relations, democratic state composition, and religious freedom intertwine with theories of conflict and the lived experience of the war.Chair: Dmytro Vovk (Benjamin N.
