Wor(l)ds on the margin. Early modern paratexts as devices of creativity

Authors: Łukasz Cybulski, Justyna Łukaszewska-Haberkowa, Joanna Pietrzak-Thebault, Krystyna Rutkowska

The panel is dedicated to the often neglected, but undoubtedly crucial elements of early modern literary culture. Although paratexts as material phenomenons found in printed and handwritten books are understood in accordance with the classical interpretation by Gérard Genette, the overall scope of phenomena prone to examination is extensive, thus investigations presented in this panel will be narrowed down to a specific scope of elements, particularly those that often lie on the margins of handwritten or printed leafs. This paratextual material, often previously or subsequently noted down by readers and authors, will be viewed in a broad context of literary and linguistic creativity in religious literature.Chair: Justyna Łukaszewska-Haberkowa (Jesuit University Ignatianum in Krakow) Speakers:Łukasz Cybulski (Vilnius University), Early modern textual genesisJoanna Pietrzak-Thébault (Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw), The Brest Bible (1563) handwritten marginalia as testimonies of private piety and day-to-day lifeKristina Rutkovska (Vilnius University), The role of paratext in 17th century multilingual literature of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania
