An act as old as Abel’s murder at the hands of Cain has once again come to the fore. The killing of worshippers in their places of prayer reflects the archetypal form of fratricide and poses an inexorable dilemma to people who are related to the faith of the victims and/or killers. This panel offers the first account of the Plorabunt research that Foundation for Religious Studies in Bologna and Palermo is conducting on murders in places of worship worldwide, from 1982 to the present day, to create a common memory that enables a deeper historical and mutual understanding between faiths, in the face of fundamentalism’s threats.Session 1Chair: Federico Ruozzi (FSCIRE / Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia)Speakers:Federico Ruozzi (FSCIRE / Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia), Introduction to Plorabunt Research: Methodology and GoalsFrancesca Badini (FSCIRE), Anna Mambelli (FSCIRE), and Adele Valeria Messina (FSCIRE / Università di Palermo), Cain and Abel: Reading Ancient Jewish, Christian, and Islamic Sources on the Archetypal Fratricide in Contemporary StudiesSilvia Cristofori (Link Campus University / FSCIRE), History of a Curse.
