The man, the myth, the God: reinterpretations of Jesus’ sacrifice in the light of cultural theory
Authors: Paweł Neumann-Karpiński, Bartłomiej Dudek, Karolina Grzybczak, Adriana Joanna Mickiewicz, Antoni Torzewski
The panel will examine the tensions that exist between two aspects of religious experience: individual (personal and affective) and collective (social and political). The presentations will demonstrate how these two spheres remain interrelated. The presentations will focus on a specific example: emotional reactions to the story of Jesus of Nazareth’s sacrifice. The theoretical framework of the panel is established by the concept of scapegoat, cultural memory theory, and philosophical concepts of emotion, with an emphasis on the concept of emotional regime and discussions regarding the pain of others. The presentations will combine elements of emic and ethical approaches, highlighting the benefits and limitations of these approaches when studying affects. The interdisciplinary approach combining literary studies, philosophy, theology, political science, and memory studies will allow for the most comprehensive discussion of the complex topic of affect and will demonstrate how many different narratives have developed within Catholic states around the story of Jesus’ passion. The panel presentations will cover the following topics in order: (a) the historical origins of the motif of Jesus’ sacrifice; (b) the use of the emotional narrative of Jesus’ sacrifice in emancipatory theology; (c) the relationship between political and religious discourse; (d) reinterpretations of the Jesus-sacrifice motif within Old Polish literature; (e) moral reinterpretations of the figure of Christ.Chair: Paweł Neumann-Karpiński (University of Szczecin)Speakers:Bartłomiej Dudek (Jagiellonian University in Krakow), Many faces of blood sacrifice: philological and philosophical studyKarolina Grzybczak (Jagiellonian University in Krakow), Literary Refigurations of Christ in Early Modern Poland: Szymon Szymonowic’s Castus JosephPaweł Neumann-Karpiński (University of Szczecin), Hungarians as Christ between nations – analysis of National Stations of the Cross image in Hungarian political memory Adriana Joanna Mickiewicz (Jagiellonian University in Krakow), The power of powerlessness.
