Women In Opus Dei: Catholic Context, Gender Discourse and Achievement

Authors: Mercedes Montero Díaz, Inmaculada Alva, Natalia Núñez Bargueño, Ana Escauriaza Escudero, Beatriz Comella, Cristina Barreiro, Dolores Esteban

We want to present the role played by the women of Opus Dei inside and outside this Catholic institution, thus, also their impact on the social and cultural environment. Both aspects will go from the first years of the presence of women in the Work (1930) until the death of the founder (1975). It will be carried out -to a large extent- from works that have used unpublished sources, fundamentally the General Archive of the Prelature of Opus Dei (AGP), but also others such as the General Archive of the Administration (AGA), of the Superior Council of Scientific Investigations (CSIC) or private family archives. During this stage, the number of women in Opus Dei and the corporate initiatives that they carry out in Spain and in other countries grow: a publishing house, university residences, training centers for women, some infant, primary and secondary education schools; and especially ordinary professional work, unrelated to Opus Dei initiatives, which the majority carried out. Not a few of them developed their task in a notorious way and some were pioneers in exclusively masculine work environments up to now. All this implies: Address the relevance of the women of Opus Dei, until now scarcely studied in the academic field.
