Authors: Maria Cristina Ivaldi, Rossella Bottoni, Pierluigi Consorti, Daniela Tarantino, Luigi Mariano Guzzo, Enrica Martinelli, Faisal Ilyas, Chidiebere Obiora Nnabugwu, Chiara Lapi
The panel is organized within DiReSoM Research Group (Law and Religion in Multicultural Societies). Most faiths share the need to safeguard and protect the environment for the future generations, united by the same concern. The preservation of the Earth and its biodiversity, as a common home of the humankind, finds prominence in different precepts and rules enshrined in sacred texts and sources. In recent times – because of the increasing pollution and drastic climate change – there has been a growing takeover by religions of the ecological issue. Nor is the recent SARS-CoV-2 epidemic unrelated to this phenomenon, which has highlighted the need for global responses for the survival of all. We are now witnessing a new trend of eco-faiths initiatives and forms of religious environmentalism. The panel aims to explore, notably «from the inside», the specific attitudes that religions have toward those that can be defined – using an expression that reflects the Christian perspective – the care of creation. DiReSoM invites contributions which are related, but not limited, to the following guiding questions: the environment and its protection in the religious laws; the cooperation and dialogue between religions and states or international institutions in the ecosystem preservation; safeguarding the Earth as an opportunity for ecumenical and interreligious dialogue; the environment and the guardianship of the sacred place.
