Emic and etic perspectives in the study of revivalist Protestantism in Europe

Authors: Matthias Ehmann, Andreas Heiser, Markus Iff, Stefanie Conradt, Miriam Schade, Darrell Jackson

In recent years, revivalist Protestantism has repeatedly been the starting point and subject of research in religious studies, cultural studies and theology. The panel explores the significance of emic and etic perspectives on research on revivalist Protestantism in Europe. By revivalist Protestantism we mean the phenomena and discourses of neo-Pietism, the free churches as well as the more recent evangelical and Pentecostal movements. The panel will examine in particular the methodological, theological and ecclesiological questions of what is own and what is foreign at the interface between confessional theology, denominational studies and religious studies.
