The Language of Colour in the Bible: Embodied Colour Terms related to Green

Authors: Emanuela Valeriani, Luca Arcari, Edmondo Lupieri, Caterina Moro, Lourdes Garcia Ureña

The study of the language of colour has generated great attention since the 19th century in several fields, especially philology and art. Surprisingly the Bible has been left on the sidelines of this research, creating a primordial void. The biblical corpus is colourful. Numerous colour terms describe the appearance of living beings, plants, precious metals, stones, articles of clothing, of skin tones. However, these terms are not always reserved for a single colour or shade of colour, nor are they always clearly defined. Perhaps this is the reason why the colourful world of the Bible is still such a little-trodden field of research. In view of this framework, Lourdes García Ureña and Emanuela Valeriani have founded the Research Group on the language of Colour in the Bible (LECOBI). In 2022 the LECOBI Research Group published a lexicographical study, The Language of Colour in the Bible. Embodied Colour Terms Related to Green giving a scholarly contribution to the theoretical study of colour in the Bible and explaining how and where the colour green appears in biblical texts, referring to the Hebrew Bible, to the Septuagint and to the Vulgate. The panel aims at opening a debate on this publication between two of the authors and the invited speakers who will analyze the methodology and theoretical insights of this volume that can be applied to further studies in the field of colour and colour understanding, including studies on aesthetics, in ancient cultures.
