Buddhist-Christian Perspectives on Death and Afterlife: Towards an Interreligious Eschatology

Authors: Mathias Schneider, Melanie Barbato, Perry Schmidt-Leukel, Mirja Lange, Achim Riggert

As a theological discipline dealing not only with death and afterlife, but also with questions of salvation and human nature, eschatology is concerned with the ultimate end of human existence. Reflecting on ultimate matters exclusively from a confessional perspective would not pay justice to the universal nature of its subject. Therefore, in the context of globalization and growing awareness of religious pluralism, the scope of eschatology has to be expanded globally by constructively taking into account the experiences and reflections of all religious traditions. During the last years, scholars have become increasingly aware of the great potential of dialogical reflections on eschatology. One of the spearheading fields that has emerged as a fruitful space for doing eschatology interreligiously is Buddhist-Christian dialogue. By drawing on the expertise of scholars from Buddhist Studies, History of Mission, Intercultural Theology, and Comparative Theology, this panel will explore the challenges and opportunities of a Buddhist-Christian reflection on eschatology. On the one hand, case studies will examine contemporary approaches in comparative and contextual theologies, on the other hand, critical historical analyses will contextualize the topic by reflecting not only on intra-religious controversies, but also on debates on death and afterlife in Buddhist-Christian encounter under European mission and colonialism in Asia, both informing participants of dialogue until today.Chair: Melanie Barbato (Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster)Speakers:Mathias Schneider (European Network of Buddhist-Christian Studies / Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster), Eschatology as a Topic of an Intercultural and Interreligious Theology: Crucial Issues and Systematic ConsiderationsPerry Schmidt-Leukel (European Network of Buddhist-Christian Studies / Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster), Śāntideva on RebirthMirja Lange (Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster), Eschatology as a Topic of Christian Mission in JapanAchim Riggert (Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster / INTRA), Towards an Apophatic, not Self-Centered Eschatology: Buddhist Impulses for Christians according to Paul Knitter
