The greatest religious event of the twentieth century is now two generations removed. How do we tell the story of the Second Vatican Council? The Oxford Handbook of Vatican II, just published, answers this question with a rich exploration of the Council’s reception and non-reception, significance for other Christians and other religious traditions, and historical dynamics. Critical questions of our time, including the role of women and globally diverse perspectives on the Council and its ongoing reception, are prioritized in this text. Scholars who have contributed to its 44 separate chapters, and others who work on these topics, are invited to propose papers that critically examine the claims in the 750 pages of the Handbook as well as larger and no less critical questions for scholarship on the Second Vatican Council today. What does the Second Vatican Council mean at a time when the European conversations once central to the Council are no longer salient for the reality that is Global Catholicism today? What does the apparent non-reception implied in certain Catholic movements and Catholic leaders today, especially but not exclusively in the Global North, mean for the long-term reception of the Council? What are the prospects for continue the work of the Council, including to attend to the lacunae obvious at the Council or which are only now emerging in greater clarity?Chair: Bryan Froehle (Palm Beach Atlantic University)Discussants:Claire Maligot (Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne)Alberto Melloni (Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia / FSCIRE)Oliver Keenan (University of Oxford)Serena Noceti (Istituto Superiore di Scienze Religiose / Facoltà Teologica dell’Italia Centrale) Massimo Faggioli (Villanova University)
