As the interdisciplinary field of theological aesthetics continues to develop, it is vital to draw from artistic, academic sources of knowledge. This panel will consist of members of Transept, a community of multidisciplinary artists and theologians associated with the Institute for Theology, Imagination and the Arts at the University of St Andrews, as well as respondents. Speakers will offer an “insider” perspective on religion both as artists and as Christian theologians. Thus, a key question this panel asks is: How can the emic maker or practitioner’s perspective enrich theological exploration or inquiry?Panellists will examine the theological dimension of poiesis (creative making) from the maker’s perspective. Each will present a work of their own art, articulating the theology within the creative process and embodied by the artwork. For instance, the material or artform may be considered a collaborator in theological method or a way to explore eigenwelt, a person’s deep relationship with self. As multidisciplinary artists, panellists will also expand the parameters of what “theology through the arts” is conceived to be.Chair:Rebekah Dyer (University of St Andrews / St Andrews Encyclopaedia of Theology) Speakers:Melody Bellefeuille-Frost (University of St Andrews)Dan Drage (Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art “Design”)Karen Kiefer (University of St Andrews)Matt Nelson (University of St Andrews) Nora Kirkham (University of Aberdeen)Chloë Reddaway (King’s College London) David Brown (University of St Andrews)Discussant: Maria Johnson (University of Scranton)
