Authors: Frederick Aquino, Pavel (Paul) Gavrilyuk, Mark McInroy, Calum Samuelson

The session introduces the ongoing Spiritual Perception Research Project (SPRP; 2007-2023), which has resulted in monographs and collected volumes, including The Spiritual Senses: Perceiving God in Western Christianity (2012), eds. Paul Gavrilyuk and Sarah Coakley, and Perceiving Things Divine: Towards a Constructive Account of Spiritual Perception (2022), eds. Frederick Aquino and Paul Gavrilyuk. The aspiration of SPRP is to make philosophical, historical, and theological sense of spiritual perception. It also seeks to make progress towards understanding the powers of the human self, especially in terms of its openness to and preparation for ‘perceiving things divine.’ The papers in this session will focus on spiritual perception in the work of thinkers in and related to the Eastern Christian tradition such as Clement of Alexandria (Gavrilyuk), Origen of Alexandria (McInroy), select writers in the Ethiopian tradition (Samuelson), and St Symeon the New Theologian (Aquino).Chair: Frederick Aquino (Abilene Christian University) Speakers:Paul Gavrilyuk (University of St Thomas), Clement of Alexandria on Seeing GodMark McInroy (University of St Thomas), Seeing the Invisible Image of the Father: The Role of Spiritual Perception in Origen of AlexandriaCalum Samuelson (University of Cambridge), The Impact of Cultural Dynamics on Spiritual Perception: The Cult of Saints in the Ethiopian Orthodox Täwaḥǝdo ChurchFrederick Aquino (Abilene Christian University), Dispassion and the Proper Function of the Spiritual Senses in Symeon the New Theologian
