In 2023, Dr John Perry and Dr Joanna Leidenhag published a short Cambridge Element on Science-Engaged Theology arguing for a more emic approach to science-and-religion. According to Perry and Leidenhag, theologians should use the tools and methods of the sciences as a source of knowledge within constructive theology. Theology is envisioned as neither the queen of the sciences, nor a serf in submission to the sciences. Indeed, Perry and Leidenhag use historical and philosophical scholarship to question the very categories of ‘science’ and ‘religion’. This panel will discuss the strengths and weakness of Perry and Leidenhag’s argument, as well as the advantages and disadvantages of science-engaged theology more widely. They will assess how unique science-engaged theology is from the wider field of science-and-religion, and other interdisciplinary endeavours. Finally, they will discuss what is at stake in the debates around science-engaged theology.Chair: Tasia Scrutton (University of Leeds) Speakers:Joanna Leidenhag (University of Leeds)William Wood (University of Oxford)King-Ho Leung (University of St Andrews) Robyn Boére (University of Oslo)Dirk Evers (Martin Luther Universität Halle-Wittenberg)John Perry (University of St Andrews)
